Student counseling takes centre stage at New Era College
Issue #10: When students arrive at New Era College for the beginning of their academic journeys, they embark on a thrilling new chapter. But any great story comes with its own ups and downs.
‘Our campus prioritises mental health. We provide accessible counseling which helps our students to be healthier, happier — and better equipped to shine,’ says mental health expert and New Era College Student Counselor, Shanel Nikolic.
_______
Every year, we enroll a significant number of vulnerable students who come to us from every faraway corner of Botswana.
Stepping into unknown territory is a challenge at the best of times. Even more so if you’ve already had a hard life.
Success on campus is a lot more than books and exams. Our students are balancing their work with many other competing forces: personal finances, relationships, homesickness and more. They are figuring out who they are as independent young people.
‘Without the right support, these challenges can end a student’s academic career prematurely. That’s where campus counseling steps in. It’s a game-changer,’ explains Nikolic.
‘We create a safe space where students can unpack their struggles and work through them with expert guidance. We are giving them a support system and the tools they need to thrive.’
‘Untreated mental health issues like anxiety and depression are escalating for youth in Botswana. Our belief is that early intervention provides a life-line which empowers our students to take charge of their mental health,’ she concludes.
At New Era College, we are proud to shape the next generation of confident, resilient young professionals. Our support systems are here, every day of the week, to set them up for long term success.

Mouth-based touchpad enables people living with paralysis to interact with computers
MouthPad^, a groundbreaking device created in San Francisco, enables users to control tech devices using their tongue, revolutionising life for people with paralysis.
“Think of this just like the trackpad on your laptop except this has been transformed into something much smaller that rests on the roof of your mouth, so instead of your finger it’s actually the tongue,” explains co-founder Tomas Vega.
