Breaking Down Big Tech: Apple's Antitrust Battle
In a groundbreaking move, the US government is taking on tech giant Apple, accusing it of using the iPhone to create and sustain a monopoly.
This lawsuit alleges that Apple's business practices stifle competition and harm consumers.
At the core of the dispute is Apple's tight control over its devices, limiting access for rival apps and services. The government contends that these actions result in higher prices and less innovation. Apple, however, defends its approach, citing security and user experience benefits.
This legal showdown is just one part of a wider crackdown on Big Tech by regulators. Similar battles are raging against other industry giants like Google and Meta. The outcome of these lawsuits could reshape the tech landscape and redefine the rules of competition in the digital age.
As the case unfolds, the implications for consumers remain uncertain. Will this legal clash lead to a shakeup in how tech companies operate? Only time will tell as Apple gears up to defend its business model in court, setting the stage for a landmark decision that could reverberate across the industry.
COVID-19 vaccine tech could help fight against malaria
Researchers believe COVID-19 mRNA vaccine research may hold the key to unlock a decades-long fight against malaria.
In addition to saving over 3 million lives and preventing an estimated 18 million hospitalisations, mRNA vaccine research is now being used to create a vaccine for malaria.
This is of particular importance to Africa. The continent carries a disproportionate burden of global malaria deaths: nearly 100,000 per year -- the majority of which are children.
Researchers are now working towards taking the vaccine into human clinical trials, which they expect to take several years.

New Era College launches the Zen Lounge
— and a whole lot more
At New Era College of Arts, Science and Technology, we are taking deliberate and progressive strides to prioritise the wellbeing of our staff. Introducing the Zen Lounge: a serene wellness centre situated at the College’s Block 8 campus in Gaborone.
Envisioned and managed in partnership with Botho Treats – a leading people wellness consultant – the Zen Lounge is a thoughtfully designed space with calming colours, plush meditation cushions, a reading nook and soothing music to create a peaceful atmosphere conducive to reflection and relaxation. It offers a peaceful sanctuary for staff to unwind and recharge.
But it doesn’t stop here. At the Zen Lounge, staff will attend workshops led by Botho Treats’ experts in wellness, mindfulness, nutrition, stress management and holistic health practices.
Senior Human Resources Manager Portia Dingaka says, ‘This initiative is not just about physical relaxation. It’s about nurturing a culture of self-care, resilience and positive coexistence.
‘By providing a dedicated space for mindfulness and rejuvenation, we empower our staff to manage stress effectively and enhance their overall wellbeing. The Zen Lounge serves as a reminder that taking care of our minds is just as vital as our bodies,’ she explains.
We have also developed and formalised a Diversity and Inclusion Policy, commissioning Botho Treats to deliver its implementation through a series of workshops and activities. The goals: to reinforce a positive workplace and strengthen our culture with a focus on collaboration, team building, trust, diversity and inclusivity.
‘Creating a nurturing and encouraging environment for our employees is the foundation for their quality of life. In our domain, that directly translates to excellence in academic achievement for our students,’ highlights Vice President for Administration and Finance, Daruosh Ghodrati.
As the demand for mindfulness and mental health support services continues to rise, initiatives like the Zen Lounge serve as a case study for organisations around the country.
